Park View School in July of 2017. |
A handsome building on Indy’s near northeast side bordering
Brookside Park, Park View School – also known as IPS School 81 and more often
spelled as one word Parkview – was built in 1930. The school is in a beautiful
location on Brookside Parkway on a terrace overlooking the park. Mature trees shade
the school grounds. The neighborhood surrounding the school has its challenges,
but the entire area around Brookside has so much potential for renewal. Park
View appears from the exterior that it has survived its 87 years quite well and
is in solid condition.
Doing some research revealed the woodwork in classrooms in School 81 when built, were done in dark oak. It was said at the time that such coloring was “less of an eye strain”.
The school operated for nearly 80 years before IPS closed
the school in 2009. The building has been occupied by The Oaks Academy since
2012 and according to the school’s website serves 235 students, grades Pre-K
through 5th grade.Doing some research revealed the woodwork in classrooms in School 81 when built, were done in dark oak. It was said at the time that such coloring was “less of an eye strain”.
I would love to hear stories and remembrances of people who attended the school. Please leave a comment.
