The downtown Indianapolis skyline is highlighted by full
moon. Indy’s canal area is one of the most popular areas of downtown. It’s a
far cry from the eyesore the canal was for most of its existence after railroads
made the form of transport obsolete by the 1850s. For better than 100 years the
canal sat dormant and was widely known as a dumping ground. Believe it or not canal water was purified by
the Indianapolis Water Company and used for drinking water. It still makes me
shutter to know I probably drank water as a kid that originated from this source.
In the 1990s the city finally set out to improve the canal and build the canal
walk.
