If you’ve never visited Indianapolis, when you do come you
should definitely make plans to visit the Circle. It’s the very center of the
city. Indianapolis is laid out on a mile-square grid with Monument Circle
serving as the centerpiece. Monument Circle has been designated as one of “10
Great Public Spaces” by the American Planning Association.
The Soldiers and Sailors Monument, dedicated in 1902, was
the first such memorial in the nation honoring the common soldier; it was added
to National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Until the early 1960s,
Indianapolis zoning laws stated that no building could be taller than the
Soldiers and Sailors Monument.
