I came across this interesting house on East St. Joseph
Street in Irvington. It’s a Lustron house from the late 1940s. Lustron houses
are prefabricated enameled steel houses developed in the post-World War II as a
low-cost alternative to conventional houses. I’ve heard there are several of
these scattered throughout Indianapolis. It would be interesting to know what
living in a steel house is like. Is it noisier, hotter, does it rust? I didn’t
have the nerve to knock on the door and find out. You can read more about
