John Greenleaf Whittier School, IPS School No. 33

A 2018 photo of the old IPS School 33, on 1119 N. Sterling St. in Indianapolis. The school was built in 1890 at about the same time the Windsor Park neighborhood was being developed.

The school had several additions as the school population grew through the 1920s. I have not been able to pinpoint when IPS closed the school. Based on city directories it seems like it may have been the late 1970s or early 1980s.

Before nearby Woodruff Place officially became part of the city of Indianapolis, the residents of the exclusive enclave paid tuition for their children to attend School 33.

The building features Romanesque Revival style brick with limestone trim. It has a limestone foundation and a decked hip roof with Queen Anne style dormers. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

It is now houses upscale apartments.
